Wood Carving
Location
Summerland BC, Canada
Dimensions
Overall Sculpture: 18.5" H × 9" W × 12" L
Base: 7" × 6.5"
This wood carving was created from two types of wood: tupelo and yellow cedar. The osprey (Seahawk) head and the regulation-size football were carved from tupelo, while the talons and ocean were carved from yellow cedar.
The piece was originally carved in 2017, but in 2026 I made several updates, including modifying the logo to the newer style and reworking the ocean waves.
One of the biggest challenges was adding all of the “dimples” to the football with a leather punch — it took a long time. The inspiration was, of course, the Seattle Seahawks, but I wanted to create something distinctly Northwest by using the talons to form the football’s “T” and carving waves inspired by Puget Sound.
The question I’m asked most often is, “How did you get the osprey head into the football without the ball deflating?” The answer is simple: the entire piece is made of wood.
After living with this carving for eight years, I’ve decided it’s time for another Seahawks “fanatic” to enjoy the piece in their home.
